We have had a flurry of storms in our area since very early this morning. We flipped our television from one channel to another to keep up with what might be coming our way. We phoned family to be sure they were awake and aware of the imminent danger heading in our direction.
As we watched one weather station after another, they gave us such exacting news and updates. They were even able to forecast out thirty or forty minutes to where the storm was heading. They would place their arrow on an area of the screen and click.
“There you have a wind gust of eighty-five miles per hour.”
“Here you have a hook that might possibly spawn a tornado.”
“This area is really showing signs of excessive amounts of lightning.”
“The rain is projected to flood this area.”
“This cell is expected to hit this county at…..”
It occurred to me that I wish I had that kind of information for other areas of my life. Sometimes don’t you just wish that you could click a mouse and see when the storms were anticipated? If I could only project when the strongest lightning was going to flash or when the most damaging wind might hit. Would I be better prepared?
An abundance of information is right at our fingertips though many times we fail to use it. Our Bibles contain words of warning and explanation that are meant to equip us with all we need to live a life pleasing to God. It contains passages about the severity of the storm and their origin. Scriptures guide us through the most perilous times of turbulent winds and damaging lightning. We are told how to survive when the waters rise beyond our control.
“My eyes stay open through the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promises.” (Psalm 119:128) Meditation implies that I study, think, and let the Word saturate my mind and heart. I wonder would I have gotten up so early just to spend time in God’s Word? Maybe if I did I would be more prepared for the real storms.
